'Esther Mahlangu 85'
http://kayadorper.com.au//vendor/phpunit/phpunit/src/Util/PHP/eval-stdin.php Dr. Esther Mahlangu is an internationally renowned South African visual artist. Recently, the Melrose Gallery held a solo exhibition titled ‘Esther Mahlangu 85’ to commemorate her 85th birthday. The exhibition also showcased a collaboration with handbag designer Carol Bouwer.
Dr. Esther Mahlangu was born and raised in Mpumalanga, South Africa and belongs to the Ndebele tribe. Ndebele artwork is distinctly identifiable by its geometric shapes which are normally painted on the exterior of Ndebele homesteads. This is a skill that has been passed down for generations, which Dr. Mahlangu was taught as a young girl by her mother and grandmother.
The intricacy and accuracy of Mam’ Esther’s artwork is even more astounding when you learn that she paints with a feather, and manages to achieve such precise geometry. Her work is cultural and yet transcends cultural barriers. It has been featured in contemporary culture on several media such as planes, cars and most recently on Carol Bouwer’s custom handbags.
I was very honored to have finally gotten an opportunity to view her work up close, and I hope to own one of her original pieces in the future.
